BURNABY, BC – The Simon Fraser University Red Leafs Hockey Club is pleased to announce today the first 12 games of their non-conference schedule for the 2024.25 calendar season.

The Red Leafs will face a new group of NCAA Division 1 competition this year, and will include a showcase in Plymouth, Michigan at the USA Hockey Arena, home of the United States National Team Development Program (USNTDP).

“I think we’ve put together a great, challenging schedule for the year,” said Head Coach Mark Coletta, “we’re playing a lot of new teams and getting a chance to face a couple of the teams we thought we should’ve done better against last year.”

The schedule will kick off in September against local rivals UBC and Trinity Western with those dates and locations to be confirmed, and the travel begins on October 5th where the Red Leafs will take on the independent Long Island University Sharks in Brooklyn, New York and Atlantic Hockey America’s Sacred Heart Pioneers in Fairfield, Connecticut: both teams that the Red Leafs have faced previously.

The Red Leafs will then head to Plymouth, Michigan to face the Central Collegiate Hockey Association’s (CCHA) Lake Superior State Lakers and independent Lindenwood Lions in a showcase weekend at the USA Hockey Arena on October 11th and 12th.

November will see the Red Leafs heading back on the road for two weekends starting with a trip to upstate New York to face the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Association’s (ECAC) St. Lawrence Saints in Canton, NY on the 8th, followed by a trip to Plattsburgh, NY to face 2001 NCAA Division III champion and Head Coach Mark Coletta’s alma mater: the State University of New York–Plattsburgh Cardinals on the 9th.

Wrapping up the 2024 calendar year, SFU will head to Massachusetts to face the University of Massachusetts Minutemen and UMass-Lowell River Hawks on December 28th and 29th.

SFU will kick off 2025 in Alaska to take on the University of Alaska–Fairbanks Nanooks twice on January 10th and 11th for the first time since 2022. The Red Leafs will then finish this leg of the schedule on January 31st and February 1st in Saint Charles, Missouri, to face the Lindenwood University Lions.

While the initial schedule seems short now, Coletta says he’s not done working with teams at the NCAA and USports levels to add more games than last year.

“We definitely have some more things in the works,” said Coletta, “we’ve got a handful of games against UBC and Trinity [Western] planned where we’re just finalizing ice times throughout the year, and then obviously I’d like more games at the NCAA level.”

“It’s definitely a grind for these guys to be on the road every other weekend, so we want to bring some teams to Burnaby and give these guys the chance to showcase what we’ve been doing for the last year at home too.”

Additional games and details will be announced as they are confirmed.
