BURNABY, BC – The Simon Fraser University Red Leafs Hockey program is excited to announce the commitment of Alek Sukunda to the non-conference roster for the 2024.25 season.

Sukunda, a right-shot defenceman from Burnaby, joins the Red Leafs as a student transfer from the USports–OUA Ontario Tech University Ridgebacks in Oshawa, Ontario, where he spent the last two seasons. His junior career saw him play parts of three years in the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) with Powell River, Coquitlam, and Nanaimo, and two years with the Moose Jaw Warriors of the Western Hockey League (WHL).

“He’s a good addition to our blue line,” said Head Coach Mark Coletta, “his playing style and size brings a physical element to our team that we value.”

“It’s always nice to bring in someone who’s familiar with some of the guys in the room and who is from the area, so we’re excited to have him on board.”

“I just want to be the best teammate I can be,” said Sukunda, a criminology major who describes himself as a defenceman who takes care of his goalie first and isn’t afraid to get into the play.

“I’m going to give it my all every time the Red Leaf logo is on my chest.”

Sukunda joins former teammates Walker Erickson and Luca Grabas from his time with the BCHL Nanaimo Clippers on the 2024.25 SFU Red Leafs.
