RELEASE | Red Leafs Hockey Club adds five home games to non-conference schedule

BURNABY, BC — The Simon Fraser University Hockey Club announced today the addition of eight more games, including five at home, to their 2024.25 non-conference schedule, bringing the total schedule to 20 games.

The Red Leafs will kick off the 2024.25 season hosting the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds in a previously announced matchup on September 13th. This is the first meeting between the Red Leafs and Thunderbirds in over a year, and the first at Bill Copeland Sports Centre since January 2023 that saw the teams play to overtime where UBC would eventually come away with the win.

Following the home opener, SFU will host a weekend series against the Trinity Western University Spartans on September 20th and 21st, and will wrap up September in Vancouver against the Thunderbirds at UBC.

“It’s always good for us to jump right into the deep end of the pool against [UBC and Trinity],” said Head Coach Mark Coletta, “We’re all very familiar with each other on and off the ice, and continuing to build those local rivalries is good for our respective programs.”

Following the previously announced USNTDP Showcase weekend in Plymouth, Michigan, the Red Leafs will add one more game to the schedule in Bowling Green, Ohio against the Bowling Green State University Falcons on October 13th.

SFU will then host two more games starting in November, hosting the ACHA Division 1 Maryville University of St. Louis Saints on the 1st and 2nd. While the Red Leafs have played several ACHA teams in the past, this will be the first time in over a decade where SFU will host games against an ACHA opponent.

“It’s nice to bring these teams from the States up here,” said Coletta, “They have similar goals to us when it comes to taking their program to the next level, so it’ll be exciting to give fans at home a taste of hockey at that level.”

UBC will return to Burnaby for a second time on November 23rd for a Saturday night matchup to wrap up the home non-conference action in Burnaby for the 2024 calendar year.
