PREVIEW | SFU wraps up 2024 in Massachusetts
BURNABY, BC – As the semester wraps up, the Red Leafs head back east for two more games to round out the 2024 calendar year.
The Red Leafs will fly out just before the New Year rings in to face the two University of Massachusetts hockey programs in Amherst and Lowell, MA.
SFU will first head to Amherst to face the University of Massachusetts Minutemen on December 28th at 3:00pm PT. UMass has two in-conference games left before the end of December, both against Boston University on Dec. 7 and 11, and has a 1-4-2 in-conference record and a 7-6-2 overall record so far this season; their only Hockey East win coming against #9 Providence by a score of 5-1. Notable Minutemen alumni include 2019 Hobey Baker Award winner Cale Makar and two-time Stanley Cup Champion Jonathan Quick.
The next day the Red Leafs will head to Lowell to wrap up the 2024 calendar year against the Hockey East #16 University of Massachusetts–Lowell River Hawks on December 29th at 12:30pm PT. UMass–Lowell is coming off a tournament victory at the Adirondack Winter Invitational over Clarkson University, and has a 10-3-1 overall record and is 5-2-0 in-conference, good for third in the Hockey East standings behind #9 Providence and #5 Maine. The River Hawks will be the first ranked team this season that the Red Leafs will face, and notable alumni include Vezina Trophy winner Connor Hellebuyck.
