PREVIEW | SFU Red Leafs host Trinity Western Spartans for Double Header

SFU Red Leafs Squareoff against Trinity Western in weekend doubleheader

The Simon Fraser University Red Leafs Non-Conference team will look to bounce back from a 4-3 season opening loss to the UBC Thunderbirds this weekend as they take on the Trinity Western University Spartans at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre in Burnaby.

The Red Leafs played a strong game vs the Thunderbirds on September 13th, but were unable to hold on to their two separate leads in the game, and were unable to find an equalizer in the third period. Forwards Walker Erickson, Max Potvin and Ben Ward were the goal scorers for SFU.

As for Trinity Western University, the Langley-based club has gotten off to a strong start this season with back-to-back victories versus Vancouver Island University 5-1, and the University of Victoria 3-2. The Spartans will look to continue their hot start September 19th versus UBC, a day before their doubleheader with SFU.

SFU will look to take advantage of TWU’s busy schedule, having had a week off between their last game, while the Spartans will be playing games two and three of a triple header on the road.

SFU and Trinity Western have a long history of play against each other, having squared off 42 times since 2014. TWU has an all-time record of 25-17 against SFU, including winning their last three matchups.

The last time the provincial rivals played each other was September 9th 2023, where the Spartans prevailed 3-2 at home.
