PREVIEW | October sees Red Leafs on the road for five
BURNABY, BC – The Simon Fraser Red Leafs head out on the road for five games in October.
The games kick off on October 5th in East Meadow, New York against the Long Island University Sharks program. SFU and LIU met once last season with the Sharks taking the game 3-1.
Then the next day on October 6th, the Red Leafs will head up to Fairfield, Connecticut to face the Sacred Heart University Pioneers for the first time since 2019. The Red Leafs, playing in the BCIHL at the time, were handed a 6-1 loss at the hands of the Pioneers. This will be the third time the Red Leafs and Pioneers meet, with the first meeting coming in 2013 where the Pioneers would win by a margin of 3-0.
With just a few days back home, the Red Leafs will take off again to Plymouth, Michigan to participate in the United States National Team Development Program Showcase on October 11th and 12th. SFU will face the Robert Morris University Colonials for the second time in as many years on the 11th, followed by another familiar matchup against the Lake Superior State University Lakers on the 12th. SFU lost both games to these opponents last season, falling to Robert Morris by a score of 3-1, and to Lake State 6-4.
To cap off the busy weekend, SFU will travel to Bowling Green, Ohio on October 13th to face the Bowling Green State University Falcons for the first time since 2014. Bowling Green would end up winning their previous matchup against the BCIHL team by a score of 7-2.
With a stronger, more experienced line up this year, the Red Leafs will look for different results against each of these opponents. Last season, the team had just a handful of NCAA games under their belt going into the games against Lake State and Long Island University, with Jimmy Darby leading the team in NCAA games played after transferring in to the program. While there are plenty of new faces in the locker room this year, the additions of new NCAA transfers Austin Fraser and Caleb Huffman, and professional goaltender Jesse Makaj will give the Red Leafs an extra edge going into this month’s action.
