GAMEDAY | Red Leafs continue east coast road trip in Connecticut against Sacred Heart

FAIRFIELD, CT – The Simon Fraser Red Leafs head up to Connecticut on Sunday to face the Sacred Heart University Pioneers for an afternoon matchup.

The Red Leafs will look to split the weekend against the Sacred Heart University Pioneers after falling to Long Island University 7-5 on Saturday.

Sacred Heart finished the 2024 season with an in-conference record of 14-10-2, earning them a berth in the Atlantic Hockey Tournament where they were eliminated in the first round in two games by Niagara University. The Pioneers had a tough final stretch, going 0-5-1 in their final six games of the season. This season however, the program was picked as the Atlantic Hockey America favourites with 102 points and five first place votes in the conference’s pre-season coaches poll.

The Pioneers also dealt with significant roster turnover this off-season, losing two key pieces to the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) and adding eighteen players to the program including eight NCAA transfers from Holy Cross, Army, St. Lawrence, UMass–Lowell, and Maine. The program added multiple players from the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL), including William Gendron (Chilliwack), Ajeet Gundarah (Surrey), Vitaly Levyy (Langley), and Michael Rubin (Coquitlam).

Simon Fraser will need to rebound quickly to have a chance on Sunday afternoon. Forward Walker Erickson lead the way with two goals against LIU, bringing his season total to 4. After a promising back and forth match in the first two periods, SFU struggled to regain the lead in the third.
